Feng Shui

Translation - wind-water - does this word combination remind you of something? I can hear many of you say 'No', well it doesn't make it any clearer to me either. Although this translation probably means nothing, the meaning behind it usually does. Whereas the two words 'wind-water' doesn't make any sense to most of us, the original interpretation often does. Feng Shui began in Chinese astronomy and it was used to orient buildings with heaven and earth, in todays society it is more about balancing heaven and earth in our homes to foster positive qi (pronounced chee).

Within the home many people already organize their rooms using this old Chinese tradition. It doesn't matter which room in the home you want to arrange, every single room can be adjusted using this old tradition. It doesn't matter how many rooms are in the hhome, they are, according to the theory all connected. For this article I would like to discuss Feng Shui in one particular room of the house; the bedroom.

Laptops, TVs and any exercise tools are not right for the bedroom, Feng Shui says. This is because this type of equipment will damage any good energy you have in there. On the other hand, positive happy pictures and items are just right for any bedroom. To promote positive energy, look for positive pictures and items that you can duplicate, as one of something is still wrong for the area. Choose pictures that are bright, lively and positive as well as ornaments, though make sure ornaments are part of a pair. Choosing inspirational items is the key to being happy. If you feel perfect about the items in the room, then chances are you are on the right track. After all, seeing a depressing photograph or ornament is going to make you feel down, whereas a bright picture of, let's say, a beach makes you feel happy.

Colours for the bedroom is another important decision you need to consider, but it's not all guesswork, feng shui can help you with this as well. The colors of human skin, which can vary from extremely pale to dark brown, are all considered to be good for the room. I believe most of these shades can combine particularly well with any other color. If you decide to use these shades, you will also find that nearly all other decors go well with them, as they are quite neutral. Rather than have the same color scheme throughout the bedroom, consider using your favorite color or contrasting color to enhance the room. As flesh shades are quite neutral, any other color you pick should go very well and look fantastic.

As for the bed, there are loads of ways it can be turned to. You should know which aspect of your life you want to influence, in almost all of them, the bed should be turned in a slightly different direction. The general rule is, decide which part of your life you want to change, then position the bed in a slightly different direction. There is no universal working position, so look up the position in accordance with the part of your life you want to improve. If you are unsure what each position means, then there are many ways to find out, from books to browsing the Internet.

As a Summerhill real estate specialist, who spent almost 3 decades working with houses, I have to tell you: Beware! Quite a few people put mirrors in their bedrooms, remember that no mirror should ever face the bed according to feng shui. That doesn't mean you shouldn't have a mirror in the room anymore. Furthermore, it is not advised to keep doors, including closet doors, open during the night.During the night it is also suggested that all doors are shut, this includes closet doors. I don't know about other people, but I always feel more secure having the doors shut anyway. For those of you that keep the door open for other reasons, such as listening out for the children, or even if you just don't like closed doors, then keep them open. Your well-being is the most primary concern. No amount positive energy is going to flow if you feel uncomfortable in your bedroom.
