Roses for me are universal flowers that mostly of us would love to see, to touch and to smell them. Roses have so many uses. Some of us offer them to our Patron Saints during fiestas and other occasions. Roses have also become the national flowers of some countries of the world. Roses also symbolize blood, love, beauty and social democracy.

Short Descriptions of Rose

Roses are native to Asia, Europe, North America, and Northwest Africa. Roses are widely grown for their beauty and fragrance. It is a shrub of the genus Rosa, within the family Rosaceae. Its name Rosecomes from French, from Latin, rosa, which was borrowed from Oscan, from Greek rhodion, from Old Persian wurdi "flower".

How and Where to Plant the Roses?

In horticulture roses are propagated by grafting or rooting cuttings. Grafting or rooting cuttings are common ways to plant the roses. Anyone can do it.

There is no need for a wide space to plant the roses. They can be cultivated in an open terrace, in the backyards and frontyards. They can be planted in plastic pots, earthen pots and wooden pots or directly to the soil with sunlight and water.

Roses in Funerals and other Occasions

Roses are commonly used in weddings, anniversaries and birthdays. And during all Saints day and Souls day that fall on November 1 and 2 for Christians, to see the clusters of roses are common with bunch of candles. These roses are meant to remembering of their love ones, who departed long ago. On funerals we also smell roses. They express sympathy to the bereaved families.

Classifications of Roses

The Old Garden Roses are the roses existed before the introduction of the first Modern Rose, La France, in 1867. They are classified into one of the following groups: Alba, Gallica, Damask, Centifolia or Provence, Moss, Portland, China, Tea, Bourbon, Noisette, Hybrid Perpetual, Hybrid Musk, Hybrid Rugosa, Bermuda "Mystery" Roses and Miscellaneous.

The Modern Garden Roses tend to be by growth and flowering characteristics. The following includes the most notable and popular like the Hybrid Tea, Pernetiana, Polyantha, Floribunda, Grandiflora, Miniature, Climbing and rambling, English / David Austin, Canadian Hardy Roses, Landscape Roses.

Rose as a National Flower

The Tudor Rose is the national flower of England and as well as being the symbol of England Rugby, and of the Rugby Football Union. It is also the provincial flower of Yorkshire and Lancashire in England: the white rose and red rose respectively.

Rose is also the state flower of four US states: Iowa and North Dakota, Georgia and New York. Portland, Oregon is also named the "City of Roses" and holds an annual Rose Festival.

Rose Symbolizes Social Democracy

Our history tells that a Red Rose is a symbol of socialism or social democracy: it is used as a symbol by British, Irish, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Norwegian, Danish, Swedish, Finnish, Brazilian, Dutch, Bulgarian and other European labour, socialist or social democratic parties, mostly adopted in the period after World War II.

A bouquet of red roses is often used to show love. It is used as a Valentine's Day gift in many countries. The White Rose was a World War II non violent resistance group in Germany.

Rose for Me

Every time I see a flower rose, I always remember that particular day. I took three red roses that worth of 5 peso from a flower shop, outside our high school building, for my sweetheart with my promise to pay the owner that I will comeback after our class that afternoon, but I did not keep my promise. I forgot to pay her. Now it is already 32 years ago and the owner had died already. Rose for me means to remember debt!
