The city’s name comes from the weekly market that is held each Thursday; “Khamis” simply meaning Thursday in Arabic. The capital of Saudi Arabia
At Riyadh - the Olaya District is the commercial heart of the city, with accommodation, entertainment, dining and shopping options. The Kingdom Center, Al Faisalyah and Al-Tahlya Street are the area’s most prominent landmarks. The Diplomatic Quarter, or DQ as it is popularly known, is home to foreign embassies and international organizations as well as residential structures and malls. With lush gardens and numerous sports facilities, it is also one of the city’s greenest areas.
It is especially known for its fine architecture, and is considered a model for other Islamic cities around the world. The center of the city, Al-Batha and Al-Dirah, is also its oldest part. September 23 is the Kingdom National Day
For the past 17 years, I am living with the fresh and the warm desert air of Saudi Arabia, I learned that there are already six Monarchy Kings who have thoughtfully worked hard to make the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia a paradise place to live in for its citizens and foreign workers as well - they are:
- King Abdul Aziz Al-Saud – from September 22, 1932 to November 9, 1953
- King Saud – from November 9, 1953 to November 2, 1964
- King Faisal – from November 2, 1964 to March 25, 1975
- King Khalid – from March 25, 1975 to June 13, 1982
- King Fahd – from June 13, 1982 to August 1, 2005
- King Abdullah – from August 1, 2005 to present
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia celebrates its National Day every September 23 of the year. It symbolizes their national unity and sets best example of solidarity between leaders and citizens.
