~Robin Speak~

Yesterday the first robin of the year came to greet him in the front yard. He spoke to her in hushed tones for a bit. She must have liked the timbre of his voice. She flitted from tree branch to the ground, alit in the grass a few yards from him. He continued to speak, asking her bird questions. “Are you going to build your nest in this tree? If so, may I visit you once in a while? Is your mate near with his bright red breast? Will my love return to me from the great winter of our lives?”

She cocked her head and studied the man closely then hopped, very bird-like, to the edge of the yard. Still speaking, he rose from his chair. She bobbed her head and, if a bird can smile, the man would swear that lady did for him.

She ran quickly, stiff-legged, across the street. He followed her into a vacant lot where she grabbed twigs, tossed them in the air. She took him for quite a walk around that field until she found just the right twig. She flew back with it to his front yard.

What a pleasure it will be to watch her build her nest in that little nook between the branches, he thought. He would write to her, dirges and odes, speak to her, whenever chance offered an opportunity. He hoped her mate would appear soon. She seemed confident in that, building her nest. Her faith answered questions deep in the man as she lived her life in preparation for the realities of her expectations. He smiled and closed his eyes. Life doesn’t wait around for us to catch up and passes those by unable to keep up. We are all of each at one time or another in our lives.
