~ the safest of places ~ night pillows & coffee cups ~ familiar kisses ~ that most dangerous of relaxed states ~ was that a whisper ~ that halting gasp of breath ~ or a howling ~ proclamation ~ then there is the fear of spiders ~

~Spider/My Love~

He remembers a spider
making its way across his bare foot
and her hand on the table
holding his as she looked
into his eyes like an angel
spider step, his foot on the floor
those lips, maybe a kiss, she said,
“Darling, I don’t love you anymore”

The phone was ringing
He heard her answer it, “Hello?”
“Yes, I told him, it’s almost over
Kisses, I gotta go”
Her eyes find his, a moment
“This should come as no surprise”
Her foot finds the spider
There is death in her eyes

“We agreed not to kill them,”
he says, immediately regrets
“You’re such a child,” she chastises
stands and walks away, he gets
up to follow her
She closes the door in his face
leaves him and the spider
alone, dead on the floor

Brilliant poem. Very sad. But all
too real.
Thank you.

Thanks, Christopher. Sad & real, yes. I watched my youngest son go through this. Sometimes Dad's hugs don't help much.

Yes, I don't kill spiders unless they bite me. My wife has me rescue them & take them outdoors:-)
