~There is a wolf in the fold~I smell it under my skin~a hungering for the lock~sex & the kill~always the same & blood is its name~
~The Where and Were~
It is too far to contemplate, the hole in my heart, too near to ignore. Having displaced myself, I find myself displaced. A sum total of what I’ve given up, I may be that at least, less at best. An ego driven fool, forever disappointed in my expectations of others, I curse my awareness. We human expect to have life both ways, to never give anything up or away. So the agnostic and the Christian, the philanderer and the loyalist, the herd animal and the lone wolf meet and agree to disagree in order to be “together.”
Time erodes such egocentricity as it erodes all things. The lone wolf circles the pack, angry with itself, its needs and desires, willing to fight and defend to attain a mate. Wolves, unlike men, seem to understand their season of need. The she-wolf comes to him at the end of his circle and battle, walks away from her usual haunts and pack mates. Theirs is a tacit union. When the season is over, she will return to the nipping and biting, yipping and yapping whole. He will grumble and growl, find that deep note, loneliness, and howl.
His voice is not a yearning to find and join the pack. It is a challenge, an invitation, “Come meet me on the killing field. Stand your ground where one of us must die.” His lonely voice is not one desirous of love. It is a lament to life, an acclimation. Courageous of spirit, he is aware at some level that he will live and die alone. Only in death will he ever join them, as in birth when his blood howled, “You must look away!”
Well, the Gods grant some of us the spirits of wolves, laugh uproariously as they listen to the lone ones howl. Prayers, preyers, there is no end to us.
