Can intellect be an obstacle to devotion?

Intellect is the capacity for rational thought or inference or discrimination.

Intellect is a trait of mind by which humans differentiate the bad and good, though we cannot draw a clear line between these two aspects.

Intellect Vs Devotion

One man's food is another man's poison.

The bad and the good are subjective and influenced by the conditioning of one's own thoughts.

Considering the overlapping aspects of good and bad, we can say that devotion is far from the intellect.

Devotion entails from believing. Devotion just happens irrespective of the intellect.

Often, intellect looks at the physical phenomenon where the rules of science are applied.

At the surface level, modern science is away from the spirituality. But many intellectuals agree that science is a way leading to spirituality.

Devotion blossoms when you are wonderstruck by the unfolding science of nature. Devotion is where you are left without any reasoning that is beyond the realms of human intellect.

Devotion to scientific thinking ultimately transforms one to believe in the revealing nature of the Creation.

Humans are the victims of their own devices. Intellect is a device humans sometimes use it like a double-edged sword. A sword is useful for the good and also for the bad. It depends on who uses it for what purpose according to a situation.

Intellect evolves as one grows from infancy to maturity. Intellect consists of thoughts.

Every communication is a thought. Devotion is a thought that communes with the supernatural.

Devotion can be practiced. Bhakti yoga is the science of devotion. By intense devotion, the so-called intellect vanishes as the thoughts cease and the 'I' ness unifies with the paramatma.

Interesting outlook on it. I believe though without intellect you can't find true devotion. Otherwise you just start following anyone who sounds good at that moment. It is by intellect that we learn where to allow our devotion to live.

You are right, Dafeenah.
That's why I considered intellect as a double-edged sword.

Though intellect paves way for devotion, that devotion must blossom beyond the realms of human intellect.

I like the assertion, that the intellect vanishes. As we all know our egocentric intellect, can justify anything if given free reign. Our intellect is only a tool, and must be considered as such, our devotion however , is the driving force of a life lived genuinely. Good point sir, thank you for sharing it.

kendroemen,

I appreciate your comments. Mostly, intellect breeds egocentric behavior. Devotion is surrendering to god in totality. And you lose yourself to god. Intellect is again a tool to choose that surrendering.

It seems like our brains can create obstacles that get in our way of happiness.

You're quite right.
Our intellect in itself is an obstacle to clear thinking.

Very good article. I have a hard time understanding the wide gap that is forming between "modern science" and "spiritual devotion". It seems to me that devotion is the starting point which is governed by our soul and intellect helps us to see our way as we pursue that which we are devoted to.

Devotion is where you are left without any reasoning that is beyond the realms of human intellect.
And I think intellect plays a role in pursuing that devotion but sometimes the same intellect may distract you from it with self-pride.

Great spiritual personality Swami Vivekananda has said that one has to throw away the intellect after reaching a particular stage in spiritual growth.

This is a wonderful and thought-provoking article. I do think that intellect and spirituality go hand in hand, they compliment one another. I do not try to rationale my spirituality but I enjoy the world around me through my science and my devotion.
Really beautiful concept Rathnashikamani :D

Indeed, my brother! Intellect is just a mere expression of the ego mind, where infinity can´t be comprehended. Devotion is a true merging with the Infinite concept of true love, where races are non-existent and we emerge as one brethren...Inspiring!
