Do you Cross-Link your Articles for Extra Traffic?

Hyperlinks are an essential part of the on-line writer's trade, it should be considered taboo to write any material without a link included within it. Cross linking ensures that when you write on multiple sites that you have the opportunity to drive traffic to other articles that you have penned.

How many Places do You Publish Material?

Most writers do not confine themselves to a single location to publish all of their material, if you are one of those that does publish in multiple places there are some things you should consider.

In many ways the on-line writer is also their own publicity agent. Firstly it is recommended that you post links on Social Media sites because they do drive a lot of readership in your direction. Secondly when you publish on multiple sites you should use the opportunity to publicise those things you have recently published elsewhere (particularly when it is related to the current writing topic). When you take a reader to a location they have never previously visited then there is a chance they may bookmark it and use it again as a reference in the future.

I currently publish in four locations, Wikinut, my new blog, 2 Drops of Ink, and HubPages and you may be assured that none of these links are affiliate links - you may visit if you so wish but that is up to you.

What Part of the Story Provides Linking Opportunities?

You may also refer to this as a relevant link. The above is part of an article published on Hubpages, which provides a link tool that will allow you to showcase certain links. This example grouped together several links that were relevant to the article in question (providing a foundation for that piece), but they also provided a consistent thread that was a part of the story told, the idea being that any reader who is interested can explore all of the relevant threads if they choose to.

From the perspective of the writer it is also an opportunity to earn extra cash from a few extra visitors that may otherwise not see this material.

Relevant or Recent

A relevant link is one that relates to the subject matter at hand e.g. other articles you have written about ancient Greek mythology, when that is the subject of the essay being written, whereas recent links are simply pointers to the more recent articles published. Either type could cross link to other sites as you feel appropriate and both types have the potential to facilitate traffic flow, it could be seen as taking thread from your sewing basket and attaching it to two related items.

You never know when a link may be meaningful to the reader. Normally at the base of each article I publish I include the twelve most recent articles published on Wikinut and is surprising how many times the article at the end of that list (which today happens to be "The First Sentence: so Critical to Writing Success") suddenly receives new comments, because it has peaked a reader's interest, just as well, because it gone from the list with the next article published.

The thing about providing links is that you do have to spend time editing your page (and be prepared to press that "Link" button on many occasions)

Linking drives Traffic

The idea behind linking is that it generates extra traffic. If, as part of your research, you reference another writer's article it is considered good manners to provide a link to it, although I would not link to corporate websites of major national or international companies - there is no evidence that such a link derives any benefit to you.

I currently write for several sites and have re-ignited my presence on Hubpages at the suggestion of a writer friend, so it is important to cross pollinate links. The idea being if only one reader in a hundred clicks on the link you will benefit again from having that reader see your page, but it goes without saying that your chances improve when your page is written well and with good language usage.

Yet there are some rules about using hyperlinks that you need to consider

These rules apply to those who create web-pages programmatically as well as those that hand-craft content for publication as articles:

  • Avoid the word "link" in your hyperlinks.
  • Exclude full stops.
  • Exclude comas, colons, and semi colons.
  • Avoid the use of special characters.
  • Quotes should be avoided.
  • Italics should be avoided.
  • Don't capitalise words.
  • Don't highlight a large amount of text for your link.
  • Avoid using too many links.
  • Avoid using images as links.

As a whole if you pen an article that is between 500 and 750 words in length then it should have 5 to 7 links embedded with the flow of your article, thus as a general rule include about 1 link for each 100 words, but don't unnaturally pad the number of links that you use.

There are many reasons why people should add links, you can help more views on your other sites, but also websites with links to other sites look good to search engines.

Peter, never bothered about any cross linkage in all my sites and still I gained tremendous views, close to 3 million over all at a conservative estimate.

Carol, I don't see why links would annoy readers, but that could be a matter of opinion, for each reader. The most annoying thing from my perspective is to have people make a serious quote from another source and not include any link to that material.
