History of Hoedspruit

Situated in the Limpopo Province on the foothills of the imposing Klein Drakensberg Mountains is the gateway to the central parts of the world famous Kruger National Park, Hoedspruit. Once a small agricultural centre, Hoedspruit has grown into a bustling tourist town with one of three airports servicing South Africa’s prime game viewing area.

Game Reserves

Hoedspruit is ideally situated in the middle of Big Five game territory. Two of the Kruger National Park’s gates, the Orpen and Phalaborwa, are within close proximity of the town, providing easy access to the game-rich central part of the renowned conservation area.

With a host of privately-owned game reserves offering game viewing with a luxurious twist close by, Hoedspruit is the ideal base from which to explore the myriad game viewing opportunities up for grabs.

The Blyde-Olifants Conservancy which lies within the Kruger Canyons Biosphere Reserve, the 35 000 ha Balule Game Reserve, Kapama Game Reserve, Klaserie Game Reserve and the popular Thornybush and Timbavati Game Reserves all lie within an hour’s drive of this quintessential bushveld community.

Accommodation

As an ideal stop over to the bush, Hoedspruit accommodation is varied and plentiful. Affordable bed & breakfasts & self catering cottages in town as well as traditional African reed and thatched rondavels in privately-owned bushcamps cater for families and those travelling on a limited budget.

Luxury air conditioned rooms at private game lodges and upmarket tented camps which offer sumptuous boma dinners and the full range of guided activities are 5-star alternatives.

Attractions

There are a number of intriguing attractions in or close to Hoedspruit which are well a visit. The Moholoholo Rehabilitation Centre is a sanctuary for injured raptors and other wild animals.

Boasting the ‘Magnificent 7’ comprising Martial, Black, Crowned, Tawny, Bataleur and African Fish Eagles as well as the Giant Eagle Owl, the centre is a ‘must-see’ for birding enthusiasts.

One of the leading private research and breeding facilities, the Hoedspruit Research and Breeding Centre can be found at the Kapama Game Reserve, 20 km out of town.

Although there is an emphasis on breeding and maintaining the dwindling cheetah population, the centre is also involved in successful breeding programmes of endangered African Wild Dog, Blackfooted Cats, Serval, Caracal, Ground Hornbill and Vultures.

Dankie Matt for a great read, I know Hoedspruit well having spent many hours in the vicinity of the Air-force base in the 1980's
